The Party: Whether sipping on cider from Ship Wheel while coming face-to-face with a horseshoe crab or indulging in Mills House snapper tacos and Fatty’s brews by the river otters, guests of the South Carolina Aquarium’s Beer From Here event experienced the best of both the culinary and natural worlds. With local craft beer and bites from some of the Lowcountry’s most beloved restaurants in hand, partygoers were invited to explore nearly all of the facility’s awe-inspiring exhibits. Different food and drink stations were set up at in all corners of the aquarium, and staff members were eager to answer questions about the abundance of animals and plant and sealife on view. With the addition of open touch tanks and a few hands-on meet and greets with the critters, this celebration of Charleston’s thriving beer scene (as well as its wildlife) made for a truly one-of-a-kind evening.
Highlight: Grace & Grits’s Executive Chef JD Coleman’s suitably named dish, “The Happy Hour,” featuring jalapeno cheddar grits, smoked sausage, pickled collards, shaved onions, and peanut relish finished with a beer mustard
Overheard: “If only drinks had been available when I brought the kids!”
